Contest Every Race Website: Building a Scalable Platform for Grassroots Democracy

Overview

The Contest Every Race website was developed as part of a broader organizational rebrand led by Studio Lake. The goal of the project was to deliver a modern, flexible, and mission-aligned website that could support storytelling, program growth, and frequent content updates by non-technical teams.

Although the initial plan was to build the site in WordPress, Movement Labs’ existing web infrastructure was fully centered on Webflow. To ensure long-term maintainability and consistency across organizational properties, the project was transitioned to Webflow early in development.


The Challenge

Contest Every Race needed a website that could:

  • Reflect a newly established visual identity and brand system
  • Support rapid updates from marketing and communications teams
  • Scale with new programs, campaigns, and content over time
  • Integrate cleanly with CMS-driven workflows
  • Remain easy to maintain without ongoing engineering support

At the time development began, Webflow had just released its new Components and page builder features. These tools were powerful but relatively new, requiring careful implementation to balance flexibility with reliability.


Constraints & Considerations

  • Movement Labs’ existing websites were already built and maintained in Webflow
  • Marketing and Communications teams needed autonomy to create and update content
  • The implementation needed to closely match Studio Lake’s rebrand designs
  • The site needed to be future-proof without requiring structural rewrites

Platform Decision

Rather than introducing WordPress as a new CMS into the organization’s stack, the project was implemented entirely in Webflow. This decision aligned with existing infrastructure, reduced operational complexity, and ensured long-term sustainability for internal teams.


Component-Driven Architecture

Using Webflow’s newly released Components feature, I built a modular, reusable system of layout and content components that could be used consistently across the site.

This approach allowed us to:

  • Maintain visual and structural consistency
  • Reduce duplicated styles and layouts
  • Enable faster page creation using predefined components

Empowering Non-Technical Teams

A core objective of the project was to shift content creation closer to the teams doing the storytelling.

By combining Webflow Components with existing CMS collections, the site enabled marketing and communications teams to:

  • Create new landing pages independently
  • Publish and iterate on content without engineering support
  • Stay within brand and layout guardrails

This significantly reduced bottlenecks and improved turnaround time for new content.

The website leveraged Webflow’s CMS to manage structured and reusable content, including:

  • Program pages
  • Reusable content sections
  • Dynamic storytelling elements

Reflection

The Contest Every Race website reinforced the importance of building technology that supports people, not just aesthetics. By aligning platform choices, design systems, and team workflows, this project delivered a site that could grow alongside the movement it supports.
